The Point Spread: Betting the Margin, Not the Winner

A spread bet does not ask who wins — it asks whether the winning margin clears a line. Handicap betting’s margin idea is the general form behind this kind of bet, and basketball’s point spread is its most common version.

Worked through with a -6.5 line on the favourite:

1. Win by 7 points or more — the -6.5 side covers.
2. Win by exactly 6 points — the -6.5 side loses that spread bet even though the team wins the game itself.
3. The underdog side of the same line, +6.5, wins its bet by winning outright, drawing, or losing by 6 points or fewer.

The Total: Betting the Combined Score

A total, sometimes called an over/under, sets a number for the two teams’ combined score and asks whether the final tally lands above or below it.

1. Combined score of 166 or higher — the over bet wins.
2. Combined score of 165 or lower — the under bet wins.
